The latest episode of my YouTube channel, The Reel Cartoonist, is out now. If you haven't come across it yet, it's where I talk about classic films, books and music, and finish each episode by drawing a caricature of someone involved.
This time I'm looking at Roger Moore and The Man Who Haunted Himself from 1970.
A Roger Moore film you might not know
Most people think of Roger Moore as James Bond, or as Simon Templar in The Saint. The Man Who Haunted Himself came just before Bond, and it shows a very different side of him.
Moore plays Harold Pelham, a buttoned-up City businessman. After a car crash, he starts to suspect that a double has stepped into his life. Colleagues mention meetings he never went to, and friends talk about things he never did. It's an eerie, clever thriller, based on the novel The Strange Case of Mr Pelham by Anthony Armstrong and directed by Basil Dearden.
Moore himself often said it was one of the few films where he really got to act, and you can see why. He's tense and haunted, and a long way from the raised eyebrow he became famous for.
Watching it in 4K
I watched the new 4K edition for this episode, and it looks fantastic. The colours, the 1970s London locations and the fashions all come up beautifully. If you have a 4K setup, it's well worth picking up.
Drawing Roger Moore
As always, the episode ends with me drawing a caricature by hand. Roger Moore is a great face to draw: the eyebrows, the hair, and that easy, knowing smile. It's the same live, hand-drawn style I use at weddings, parties and events, just with a bit more time to enjoy it.
